Providing exceptional care and support not only for the elderly but for younger adults too

Welcome to Wykenhurst Care

Wykenhurst Care is registered with the Care Quality Commission to accommodate 25 people. What makes us unique is that we provide exceptional care and support not only for the elderly but for younger adults too. Specializing in mental health needs we find the range of ages promotes the “sense of family” whilst ensuring we continually deliver quality, person centred care for a wide array of abilities, interests and preferences.

About us

Established in 1985 by sisters Judith & Lyn, Wykenhurst is a privately owned residential home in the market town of Hereford caring for people with a variety of needs including those living with mental health conditions.

Much has changed in their 34 years of care and Wykenhurst has grown substantially and adapted to meet the ever changing needs of its occupants. In its infancy Judith lived in with her family whilst Lyn’s son and now grandchildren have been frequent visitors during school holidays all through the years which has created a real family environment within the home. Over the years the ever- increasing demand for rooms necessitated the purchase of two neighbouring properties to allow the home to grow but Judith and Lyn have ensured the home has retained its close family feel, providing and inclusive and nurturing environment for all who live and work here. We believe it is this “hands on” attitude that has set Wykenhurst apart from other care establishments, proven by the fact that Wykenhurst has one of the lowest staff turnover records in the industry.

Care

Each resident has a tailor made plan of care to ensure all their needs are met in order for them to continue leading a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
When they first come to live at Wykenhurst a resident is assigned their own key worker, who supported by the staff will endeavour to get to know them thoroughly and liaise with family and friends to be able to support the resident with the adjustment to life in the home. Our staff continually strive to create and maintain a positive and homely environment for all of our residents and understand the importance of keeping relatives informed when appropriate. Family and friends are welcome to visit any time.
Independence and dignity are extremely important to us at Wykenhurst and whilst we are here to support the day to day living needs of the residents we continually encourage everyone to be as independent as they are able ensuring a sense of achievement and well- being.

Accommodation

All efforts have been made to retain the original Victorian features and the result is spacious, homely and individual accommodation for the residents. We have well appointed bedrooms and several living rooms within the home, we encourage residents to personalise their rooms to their own taste to create a home from home. Spread over three properties and floors with a walled garden and seating at the rear there is plenty of space to escape should quiet reflection be the order of the day.
The left wing of the house provides a more independent environment with its own kitchen, lounge, bathrooms and toilets for those requiring just a little support to maintain a balanced, healthy and safe lifestyle, secure in the knowledge that help and support are no more than an a room away.
There is separate purpose built activity accommodation within the gardens of Wykenhurst know as “The Garden Room”, it has its own kitchen, toilets, and private meeting room to compliment the generous activity space.

Activities

Wykenhurst Care encourages a stimulating and fulfilling social life, supporting hobbies and interests we employ an in-house activities coordinator who tailors activities to the residents wishes anything from pub outings, walks, bowling, gardening, music sessions, gentle exercise sessions, reminiscence therapy right through to pottery, painting, arts and crafts and games on the x-box!
We have recently purchased our own mini bus to enable trips to the seaside, country walks, animal parks, fruit picking, chicken farms etc… The advantage of our own transport is that it enables us to be spontaneous and take advantage of a sunny day with a trip to the woods, for lunch or an ice cream.
Residents have a choice of visiting hairdressers and beautician or are free to continue to visit their own barber/stylist. We offer a choice of daily home cooked meals and cater for all tastes and dietary requirements.
There are many local amenities including a corner shop, Tesco Express, a major supermarket, pub, sports club, hair salon, post box and church all within a very short walking distance. There is also a bus stop at the end of the road with a direct bus service into the city centre every 20 minutes.
